Growing the Region through a Focus on Downtown
Led by the Downtown Council (DTC), business, civic, and neighborhood leaders joined together over the last two years to imagine the future of greater Downtown Kansas City. With the guidance of the steering committee chair, Warren Erdman, Kansas City Southern, the planning process attracted both long-time stakeholders and emerging voices across greater Downtown to work together.
Building the Capital Infrastructure
Small businesses and their employees are the fabric of our community – they’re our friends and neighbors, and the focus at AltCap. When the pandemic and early talks of economic shutdowns threatened the livelihoods of our small business owners and entrepreneurs, Alt-Cap stepped in.
Prosper Through Social Capital and Connections
We have an opportunity to make KC a place people want to come and stay.
Metrics are our Rallying Cry
KC Rising measures the progress of the Greater Kansas City metro in comparison to other metros of similar size who are doing better than we are – aspirational benchmark metros. As we improve overtime, moving up and to the right, then KC is rising.
HeART Brings Us Together

Connect with the Shared Vision
You are invited to join the movement! You can download a Pillar badge (or multiple pillar badges) and add it to your organization’s materials or website. This guide will walk you through how to use the downloadable badges as well as an aligned KC Rising logo.
Expand Social Capital and Connections
The Working for Youth initiative was a featured effort that provides summer work experiences to youth, ages 14 to 18, who live east of Troost Avenue. This effort was supported by 33 community partners and led by a coalition of three nonprofits (Hire KC, Entrepreneurship KC and KC Common Good). The experience focused on building students’ work experience and expanding their professional networks, helping to set them up for success in pursuing career opportunities.
Invest in the Next Generation
KC Scholars is recruiting individuals from a variety of backgrounds to spend approximately 20 hours reviewing scholarship applications mid-March to early April. KC Scholars will need more than 200 community members to review essays and recommendations. This is a great way to become part of a movement in KC to help more Kansas Citians go to and complete college.
KC is Leading in the Recovery
By the 3rd quarter of 2013, half of all United States metro areas had recovered all the jobs lost during the Great Recession (Prosperity at a Crossroads.) When compared to cities of similar size, KC was one of only four metro areas in its peer group still in the red in terms of post-recession employment.
What is Industry 4.0?
We are in the 4th Industrial Revolution – or Industry 4.0. In 2016, the World Economic Forum predicted that in 10 to 15 years automation, robotics, and machine learning would have completely transformed manufacturing and many other industries.
